A big boost to the study of the Idoma language is being initiated with the planned maiden edition of the *IDOMA LANGUAGE INTER-SCHOOLS DEBATE* scheduled for the St Monica’s Girls Secondary School in Otukpo town on 11th December 2023.
The program, being put togetherby the IDOMALANGUAGE DEBATES PROJECT, has drawn its first sponsorship from a foremost Idoma Professor of Economic History and present Secretary General of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Yakubu Aboki Ochefu.
Sen. Abba Patrick Moro
Speaking to Mustardpoint Media on the planned Idoma language debate among Secondary Schools in Idomaland, Prof Yakubu Ochefu pointed out that the time had come for all Idoma people to put all hands on deck and look inwards in order to initiate projects aimed at rescuing the Idoma language from going into extinction. The former Vice Chancellor of Kwararafa University, Wukari, expressed serious concern with the prevailing Idoma elite disposition which had led to many Idoma children neither being able to understand nor speak their own mother tongue.
“We must all come together as concerned Idoma people to try and put an end to this ugly trend. Culture is a very strong factor in human development and language happens to be a prime driving force of culture. A people without a strong means of communication cannot make meaningful progress”, emphasized the former Benue State University Deputy Vice Chancellor.
The maiden edition of the IDOMA LANGUAGE INTER-SCHOOLS DEBATE would involve a live stage debate among some Secondary Schools within Otukpo town on invitational basis.
